So, as part of my aforementioned goal to eat healthier, I’m going to try a “diet” (oh how I hate that word) I read about a couple of weeks ago.
I don’t want to think of it as a diet though. Diet implies that it’s temporary. I’m not “going on a diet,” instead, I’m changing my diet. Right now my diet is mainly meat (beef and pork), fried foods, noodles, and rice. Hardly is a vegetable to be found.
I wanted to do something healthy, but something I could stick to. I may not have a sweet tooth, but I constantly crave fats, meats, and salts. These are definitely not things can deprive myself of.
So I read an article in Reader’s Digest about a “manly man” who really needed to lose weight and body fat. What he did was eat vegetarian up until 6 PM, at which point he would eat whatever he wanted for the rest of the day. That sounds pretty easy, right? I mean, yeah I love meat, but I think I can go until 6 PM without it. I’m usually at work anyway where my food choices are limited to begin with. So can Vuthy do it?
Well, I’m going to try at least.
Tonight I’m going grocery shopping* and stocking up on vegetarian-friendly items. I think I’ll still have eggs and dairy, but not fish. I actually do like vegetables and find them super yummy if prepared correctly.
So here’s my brainstormed grocery list for my vegetarian until 6 PM diet:
- Meatless Sausage
- Portobello and Shitake Mushrooms
- Italian and Spaghetti Squash
- Collard Greens
- Sunflower Seeds
- Tortilla Wraps
- Brussel Sprouts
- Bean Sprouts
If prepared the right way, eggplant and mushrooms have a similar texture and taste to meat. Portobello burgers and eggplant Parmesan are both delicious meatless dishes. I think Italian squash sautéed in olive oil tastes like mussels! There’s also a meatless sausage that tastes like the real thing but I just can’t remember the brand right now. As for vegetables, I totally love vegetables that have a nice snap to them like asparagus, cucumbers, and broccoli. Texture is a big thing for me when it comes to food and is one of the reasons I really enjoy meat. Now let’s see if I can find some recipes online to make tasty vegetarian dishes for this meat lover!
Update: Well I googled “vegetarian dishes for meat lovers” and came across a few sites with recipes I think I can make an enjoy. Though I see that a lot of vegetarian dishes call for ingredients I don’t like, namely tomatoes, beans, and olives. I’m not a big fan of peanut butter either, and usually don’t like onions or bell peppers. I know all of these are supposed to be really good for you, but I’m not going to force myself to eat something I don’t like. That’s a sure recipe for failure.
