Doggie DNA

“What kind of dog is that?”

I get asked that almost every time I’m out with Penny.  I also get comments on how beautiful she is.  She really is an awfully cute dog with that pink nose and those floppy pink ears.  I usually answer that Penny is a pit bull or a Staffie or that I’m not sure, because really, I’m not sure at all.  Her papers from the shelter say that she’s an American Staffordshire Terrier.  Jesse’s papers had her pegged as a black Labrador mix, but it turns out that Jesse’s half Rottweiler, half mutt with some German Shepherd mixed in.

I’ve been dying to know for sure what exactly Penny is.  I was going to do the same DNA test that Jesse had, but unfortunately Canine Heritage doesn’t check for American Staffordshire.  After some research, I found a company with a database of over 190 breeds.

After some wrangling and a headlock or two, I sent in the DNA samples yesterday.  I’m looking forward to receiving the results in 2 – 3 weeks.

I’m expecting to see the AST in her report, but I also expected to see Labrador in Jesse’s.  Maybe I’ll be surprised once again.

I purchased the dog DNA test kit from Amazon where it was around $50.
