A Cold Saturday Night

Just came in from watching the game. We lost, by the way, but it was a great game. Went into extra innings, and then for some reason we put Timlin on the mound! Argh! He loaded the bases and Tampa Bay won in the bottom of the 11th. :-(

Oh well, it’s only Game 2.

The evening news is on now, and as is typical for Los Angeles, the “top story” is the weather. It’s quite silly how much attention “adverse” weather gets around here, and it’s not even bad weather, it’s just different.  This weekend has been the first cold weekend this year.  Well, as far as I can remember that is.  The Santa Ana’s are back and it is chilly and very windy!  Usually the Santa Ana winds are warm and dry, but this time around they’re a blast of cold air.  Leaves are being strewn everywhere, swirling through the air and collecting in piles on the street and in the gutter.  It actually feels like autumn now!  I get a bit nostalgic for autumn back east, especially Halloween.

My childhood memories of autumn include cold, brisk nights.  Clear skies and a bright moon cast long, odd-shaped shadows across gray streets lined with cars and bags bursting with raked leaves.  The air always had a sharpness to it.  Crisp, but not too cold, with enough of an edge to keep you awake and moving along.  It held in it a hit of suspense and you always got the sense that something unusual could happen or was happening somewhere in that strangely-lit night.

There is probably something strange happening now in Hollywood.  Actually, there is always something strange happening out in Hollywood, but not for me, not tonight.  I’m home with the dogs, contemplating turning on the heat for the first time this year.  Thinking about food, not because I’m hungry, but because pairing food with cold weather just seems like the thing to do.

Last night, while watching Game 1, David Carradine sat down next to me at the bar. We chatted a bit. He’s exactly what you would expect, though can’t say that I was expecting anything.

Anyway, time to get warm!
