Pack Rat Unpacks
After a fairly uneventful day in the office (lots of tedious Photoshop work getting ready for our Thanksgiving promo), I’m looking forward to getting home tonight. Only 20 minutes left, - yay! I have a few items waiting for me in the mail:
- A fresh order of contact lens - good God, I’ve been trying to make my last pair last as long as possible, but after having worn it for 9 weeks longer than I should have, my eyes just couldn’t take it anymore.
- A new pair of glasses - I ordered it online using their visualizer, but as with many things I order online, I won’t know if I like it until I get it and try it on, eek.
- A fresh bottle of exfoliating serum from Paula’s Choice - now that it’s getting drier and colder, my skin needs some extra TLC. This this is da bomb, yo.
What I’m not looking forward to is a busy evening of walking the dogs and figuring out dinner. Also, over the weekend during one of my not-so-smart impulses, I decided to finally organize my wardrobe. I took everything out and piled it on my bed with the intent of sorting through it. Well surprise surprise, I haven’t. At night I just plow it all to one side so I can sleep, but unfortunately it creates an irresistible mound for Penny to go digging around in. *sigh* So now I have to do a lot of laundry and pick out her porcupine-like fur.
Looking at my wardrobe laid out like that, I realized that I have a lot of clothes. I’m not a very trendy or fashionable person (t-shirts and jeans, please!), yet I still have a lot of clothing. Sadly, much of it I’ve hardly worn, especially jeans. Being as short as I am, most jeans are too long on me. I buy those that fit well with the intent of having them hemmed, but instead they sit in my closet. I have at least 5 pairs that I don’t wear simply because they’re too long. I also have a lot of t-shirts I don’t wear because I’m a slob and they get pushed to the back of my closet and I’ve been too lazy to go digging for them. I’m actually wearing a new t-shirt now for the first time ever after buying it 2 months ago, and that’s only because I “excavated” it from the black hole that is my closet. The same goes for shoes.
On the other hand, I also have several dresses, skirts, and feminine tops that I know are there and yet never reach for. I buy them because every now and then I entertain the notion of mixing up my style a bit and dressing with a bit more pizazz, but at the end of the day (or the beginning, rather), I just go with what I know is comfortable and functional. Despite my track history, I continue to buy stuff I know I probably won’t wear! Argh.
The same goes for makeup. I have tons and tons of makeup, from low-end drugstore brands to expensive designer brands. I love buying eyeshadow and foundations especially, but out of any given month, I’ll probably go out with makeup on 3, maybe 4 times at the most. I don’t wear makeup to work and usually on the weekends I do so only if I’m going out someplace special. So why do I keep buying makeup! I think I just like the packaging and the endless nuances of colors. It’s like collecting pretty seashells or stamps.
With the days getting darker and the weather getting grayer, I should try to liven things up by going through my wardrobe and makeup collection. It is fun dressing up and playing with colors; I guess I’m just too lazy.
For Halloween, I went as an elf and cracked open my pricey Urban Decay eyeshadow collection. I painted my eyes in greens, golds, and yellows. I really liked the look and it was fun to do!

I think I’m going to start using my eye makeup more, or at least, stop buying new stuff when I have so much already. It’s also probably time to wear something else besides t-shirts and sneakers.
Or not.
