Thanks for this. I had figured out how to copy and rename those functions in my own functions.php file to customize the slideshow without hacking nextgen core files, but I couldn't quite figure out the $exclude bit. Thankfully this solution ranked high in my search so I found it easily.

Thanks so much for your tip, very helpful and the last piece of my particular puzzle.

Glad it helped you! I wasn't sure if it was still relevant since this blog entry is old and there may have been changes to NextGen and Wordpress since then but if it helps point people in the right direction, I'm glad for that. :-)

Sorry, the "<_a_href" seams to turn into links, so i try it again with underscores:

4. Now we duplicate the full function (ngg_widget_output) we just renamed the line above and rename it as well and change this:
$out = '<_a_href="' . $image->imageURL . '" title="' . $description . '" ' . $thumbcode .'>';
to that:
$out = '<_a_href="?page_id=' . $image->pageid. '" title="HI' . $description . '" ' . $thumbcode .'>';
So you got this:
function ngg_widget_outputTN($args, $widget_args = 1 , $options = false) {
######LEAVE THE CODE IN HERE I'M JUST SAVING SPACE #############
//TODO:For mixed portrait/landscape it's better to use only the height setting, if widht is 0 or vice versa
$out = '<_a_href="?page_id=' . $image->pageid. '" title="HI' . $description . '" ' . $thumbcode .'>';
// Typo fix for the next updates (happend until 1.0.2)
######LEAVE THE CODE IN HERE I'M JUST SAVING SPACE #############
echo $after_widget;
}
}
5. Now you can use this wherever you need it and the images link to the gallery that includes them:
if (function_exists("nggDisplayRandomImagesTN"))
nggDisplayRandomImagesTN($number_of_pic,$Width,$Height);

... and remember to turn the underscores from "<_a_href" into links again.

Thanks! You helped me to figure out how to edit the nggDisplayRandomImage() function to link from random images to the particular page where the gallery is displayed.
Somebody interested? Let me show you:
1. Go to wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/widgets/widgets.php
2. Duplicate the function nggDisplayRandomImage() and rename it:
/* Tobis Funktion*/
function nggDisplayRandomImagesTN($number, $width = '75', $height = '50', $exclude = 'all', $list = '', $show = 'thumbnail') {

$options[1] = array('title'=>'',
'items'=>$number,
'show'=>'original' ,
'type'=>'random',
'width'=>$width,
'height'=>$height,
'exclude'=>$exclude,
'list'=>$list );

nggWidget::ngg_widget_outputTN($args = array(), 1, $options); # <--3. Change the name of this function

4. Now we duplicate the full function (ngg_widget_output) we just renamed the line above and rename it as well and change this:
$out = '<a href="' . $image->imageURL . '" rel="nofollow" title="' . $description . '">';
to that:
$out = '<a href="?page_id=' . $image->pageid. '" rel="nofollow" title="HI' . $description . '">';
So you got this:
function ngg_widget_outputTN($args, $widget_args = 1 , $options = false) {
######LEAVE THE CODE IN HERE I'M JUST SAVING SPACE #############
//TODO:For mixed portrait/landscape it's better to use only the height setting, if widht is 0 or vice versa
$out = '<a href="?page_id=' . $image->pageid. '" rel="nofollow" title="HI' . $description . '">';
// Typo fix for the next updates (happend until 1.0.2)
######LEAVE THE CODE IN HERE I'M JUST SAVING SPACE #############
echo $after_widget;
}
}
5.
I'm glad it works for you. I've been meaning to upgrade to the latest version which I'm sure has a lot of bug fixes, but I'm reluctant because mine works fine now, is already rather customized, and I don't want anything to break - eek!
