Solotica Hidrocharme Mel and Hidrocor Ocre

A few months ago I bought I decided to try colored contacts again after a disaster a few years ago.

Back then I bought a colored pair, sight unseen, with my regular contact lens order. It was Acuvue 2 Colors in hazel. And it was horrible. The colored area looked like it was painted on harshly and the crazy pupil hole made it appear as if I was looking off in different directions.

My regular eye color is very dark, basically black, and unless there’s bright light right in my eye, you really can’t tell my iris from my pupil.

Now this isn’t me, but this is what I looked like with my hazel contacts:

Wonky eyes

Ugh! Well after a lot of research, joining a messageboard, and looking at before and after pictures of various colored contact lenses, I decided on a Brazilian brand called Solotica. They are well-known for having high-quality lens that focus on replicating the depth seen on natural eyes.  They were especially recommended for dark eyes.

Solotica contact lenses come in 3 different types: Natural Colors, Hidrocor, and Hidrocharme. That’s also the order of their opacity, with NC being the most see-through. Additionally, Natural Colors and Hidrocharme both have limbal rings while Hidrocor does not. (The limbal ring is the ring of darker color around the iris.)

I decided on the Hidrocharme in the “mel” shade. Now although mel means “honey” and is shown as a golden yellow lens, I read that on brown and dark eyes, the resulting blend looks more green. With my eyes being so dark, I was worried that I would be wasting my money, but I was feeling impulsive and bought a pair anyway.

Well they are green! I really like the results:

Solotica Hidrocharme Mel on Black Eyes

I do have a few issues with it though.

  1. They’re not as comfortable as my regular Acuvue 2 lenses that I wear daily for vision correction. These Solotica lenses are much thicker, which I guess is necessary in order for that color to show up. I can’t wear them for more than 4 or 5 hours without getting really tired eyes.
  2. There seems to be manufacturing inconsistencies.  One of the lenses is about 30% thicker than the other. If you’re a regular contact lens wearer, you’ll notice the difference right away not only on your finger but also in your eyes.
  3. It makes me look like I have a huge pupil.  Most well-designed colored contact lenses create an “unpainted” circle in the middle for your pupil to show through.  Around this circle they may fade the dominant lens color and add in touches of other colors to create a nice blend with the lens and your natural eye color for a natural looking starburst around your pupil.  Well, since my natural eye color is basically the same color as my pupil, that “starburst” is just a big black pupil.  It looks kinda weird to me, but I don’t think most people even notice.  Example:
Big Pupil Hole on Solotica Hidrocharme Mel

Big Pupil Hole on Solotica Hidrocharme Mel

Despite all these, Solotica gives me the most natural look I think I can get with colored contacts.  It’s been a lot of fun being able to change my eye color so dramatically.  It’s like changing your hair color or painting you fingernail—quite quick and easy, but makes a huge difference.

Anyway, I was so impressed with my Hidrocharme Mels that I decided to buy another pair of Soloticas.  This time I wanted to try something without the limbal ring so I ordered the Hidrocor in ocre.  Ocre is supposed to be a grayish brown color.

Well, I received the order last week and I’m on the fence about it.  It’s a much lighter color than my Hidrocharme Mels, and I don’t know if I like it.  It almost makes my eyes look milky or cloudy, and I think I kinda miss having a limbal ring that define my eyes.

I had a few pics of me wearing the Hidrocor Ocres, but I accidentally deleted them.  I’ll take new ones soon; I need an excuse to try them out again.  I haven’t worn my new Hidrocor Ocres often enough to say definitively if I like them or not.  For now though, with it being fall allergy season and the wildfires filling the air with smoke, I’m sticking to my glasses and my comfortable clear lenses.

Where to buy Solotica Colored Contact Lenses and other Contacts:

While shopping for contacts, I found some great deals online, though you can’t really find the Solotica brand here you can browse for other types of colored or regular contact lenses:

If you really want the Solotica, you can try to buy them from this Brazilian site: Viallure. Shipping takes a while and it’s pretty pricey compared to most other sites. Not really worth it for me since I don’t wear my contacts that often, but might be for you.

Update: A photo of my hidrocor ocres can be seen here.

Update #2: New pic of my Solotica Hidrocharme Mel contacts on my nearly black eyes, taken 12/08:

Love them but wish they were more comfy!

I am replying to the soloticastore.com, now call natlenses.con...and yes they are a scam! They took my money, never shipped my items, and I had to dispute it through Paypal in order to get my money back. They say they are stated in Brazil, and it's a lie. They are located in a remote town in Peru. The strange thing about it is that their Paypal account and website domain have registered with U.S, with bogus telephone numbers and addresses. Do not buy from this websites; you will never get your items. I have filed a complaint to the domain host and to scam.com, to aware others.
  • I've only ever used Acuvue 2 Colors, so I don't know how these compare to Freshlook but I found Solotica to be rather thick. I hardly wear my contacts anymore.
  • martine
thank you for your blog, im looking to try solitica and needed to know which color to choose. However, i have a question..i have used freshlook colorblends and find that they are ok and not thick, would you consider solitica to be thicker than freshlook? i have tried fusion and those really felt thick and stiff to me, so freshlook so far is the most comfortable. I just want to know how the thickness of solotica compares to freshlook. thank you, really appreciate your article.

Hi, thanks for all the info. Very well written. I really want to try these lenses. I've only just started researching them. Thanks again.

    Hi,

I got an email from someone at SoloticaStore.com asking me to remove some of the comments here about them.

I am not going to censor my readers, but to be fair, I will post their email and their concerns. I don't know anything about them and can't say if they're good or bad.

Like I said before, it is up to you to decide for yourself and do as much research as you can before buying anything online.

Here's what they wrote to me:

    ###

Hello, We are soloticastore.com We are just doing some research because our competitor Wrlens\' people are writing bad reviews about our online store www.soloticastore.com (they say our store is a scam, this does not make any sense, we only accept paypal and paypal refunds all the money if the customer is not satisfied)
I\'m asking to eliminate all the comments refering to our website. Link: http://www.vuthy.com/blog/2008/11/18/solotica-h...

We accept paypal only, so scaming does not make any sense because paypal is a secure way to send money, and if any of our customers has a problem they can file a dispute and get their money back. We are asking because this is really afecting our reputation.
    Thank you for your help

Thanks for the support Yvette and everyone else, but let's all let this go. I'm not upset at honeybfine and hope that whoever she is, she can reach a point where she stops caring so much about how others look and lashing out at someone she doesn't even know! Yes, she's entitled to her opinion, but there's so much unnecessary bitterness and nastiness behind it.

To everyone, be free to look and dress how you want and not judge those who are. Life is over before you know it and don't waste it by letting others keep you from doing what makes you happy. :-)

From this point forward, I will remove any negative comments directed towards *any* of the commenters. Let's keep it positive! (L)

honeybfine: b quiet. or...just shut up.
you're probably not very attractive and are lashing out at cute girls who are prettier than you.
    just grow up.
    please.

Okay, did anyone ever actually receive lenses from soloticastore.com
Because I recently ordered from them, e-mailed them and received no reply. I'm really just interested in getting my money back and want to know what my options are...
  • gchel
WRLens.com is in Brazil and directly distributes the lenses for the Solotica Corp. They are a helpful group and work with you so customs in your country ( mine is USA) will let your shipment in. The Customs around the world do not like to transport anything containing fluid substances so then tend to hold them a bit to make sure it not a liquid explosive in disquise. Hang tight ladies. And order away.
  • gchel
Vuthy..... like you said, takes a while to get them; but worth it. Best price...best site. (WRLens.com)
Great people. Most natural look for colored contacts is Solotica. I used to work as an optician and have tried and seen a lot of contact lenses. Always use rewetting drops while wearing the contacts. http://www.vuthy.com/wp-content/plugins/smilies...
  • Gisell
Vuthy you are right. Soloticastore is from Peru , they don´t sell the original soloticas . They sell alpaca rugs and cheap jewelry at very high prices at www.peruvian-spell.com.
By the way, I love, love the colour you get with solotica and the limbal ring looks very good too. They look very well-centered as well.
  • dorhan
Just to let you know. SOLOTICASTORE is a SCAM I ordered a pair of mel on there, which were supposed to be shipped on the next days, after 2 weeks they don´t ship anything and don´t get the tracking number. When I email the website to ask what's going on, I get no response. this site is definitely a ripoff. I thought that soloticastore and solotica were the same hut they are not In fact, Solotica company is suing soloticastore. So watch out guys, WATCH OUT
  • Vuthy
    @Alexis and @Coco

The Brazilian site is a bit confusing since it's in Portuguese. Make sure you are looking at the right lens. If t doesn't have a drop down to pick colors, it's probably not the right page for the lens you want.

The Viallure site loads fine for me, Coco, maybe it was a one-time fluke or a browser compatibility issue? I use Firefox.

@lilakay Thank you for your kind words!

@Veronica Never heard of that site but if you're seeing bad reviews elsewhere, I say go with your gut and cancel while you still can. Just make sure you get all the facts. Looks like (based on the domain name) it's a Peruvian site. Good luck!
  • Veronica
have a question, just ordered at soloticastore.com and now i'm hearing they might not be legit. anyone know if this is true? also, how long did the shipping take? thank you
  • lilakay
Vuthy, just ignore what "honeybfine" had to say, you are absolutely gorgeous, and I think that people of ethnic and multi-racial backgrounds are some of the most beautiful people I have ever seen!! People who come from ethnic backgrounds are blessed because they hone and bring together so many wonderful cultures in one. It's such a gift to be able to hone and be a part of such amazing cultures. Do not mind those superficially gilded other who have trouble accepting diversity (GET USED TO IT, HONETBFINE! SPECIALLY IF U LIVE IN AMERICAAA!!) It's such a shame that all people like that can do is discriminate and hate on others they don't even know! "Honeybfine" probably just has his/her own issues and has trouble accepting his/her own self. They just have lack of self-confidence and therefore feel the need to pick on other people. I love your that you are sooo kind to take the time out of your day to write to all of us and help those who are interested in contact lenses, and also helping us decided whether or not soloticas are for us. Thank you sincerely for all of your knowledge and generousity!
  • coco
I tried the viallure website, but i cannot seem to go beyond the homepage? none of the other pages redirect...is this my mac's prob? Hmm...have you visited the website lately?

Thanks for the super informative blog btw!! =)
  • Vuthy
    @honeybfine

Wow, so much hatred! I hope you're having a bad day and not usually carrying so much hate around.

I love my ethnic, Asian nose. How could you want me to get a nose job, which by design would be not natural, and at the same time be against colored contacts? It's strange how plastic surgery (of the face no less!) is okay with you but not temporary colored contacts. To each her own I suppose.

I hope you are able to work out what makes you happy and don't continue to dwell on what strangers look like nor what they think of you. It's a good place to be once you get there.
  • honeybfine
Get a nose job that thing is huge, oh please honey looks so unnatural asians don't have green eyes i could see if you were mixed or something just looks plain fake!!!!!!!
  • Alexis
Hey I went on the brazilian site, but I cant seem to actually choose the color of the Hydrocor Solitica lens...
(ocre mel and grafite to be more exact)Can you help me out?
    Thank a lot !!! :-[
  • Ya know this reminds of something I saw on tv where they do surgery on your eyes to change the color. They actually put the "lens" in your eye and unroll it.

The procedure can only be done in Panama I think cause they won't approve it in the U.S.

The lenses look good though. :-)
  • Molly
Thank you so much for your information...... I want to get a pair of soloticas, but i am so indecisive on what type and color to get! I am looking for the most natural, darkest color.....my eyes are are medium golden brown, i have looked at pictures of the natural colors and they just dont look very natural at all. I just want a more subtle look. What do you think? Thank you so much! - Molly
  • Meagan
thank you so much for your information and help it is greatly appriciated.
    sincerely Meagan
    :-D
  • Vuthy
You know what Meagan, they probably have not been approved (or even reviewed) by the FDA considering you can only get them from Brazil. But these aren't hard lenses. They're soft, flexible lenses, but because they are designed to cover up darker eyes especially, they are thicker than non-colored soft lenses. I have heard of some people who do wear them with their eye doctor's knowledge, and their doctors are okay with it as long as they don't keep them in for a long time or wear them too often. Less oxygen gets to your eyes due to the thickness which is unhealthy if you wear them for more than 4 - 6 hours a day, and believe me, you won't want to wear them for longer than that because they do get uncomfortable!

I haven't heard of any good FDA-approved U.S. brands. I tried Acuvue 2 Colors and didn't like them, and it sounds like Freshlooks didn't work for you. There are many lenses that are used throughout Japan that aren't approved in the U.S. (including some Acuvue styles). A lot of what the FDA does has to do with money and lobbyists and making sure something that gets "approved" doesn't compete with the big businesses here who donate $$$ to the government, so though it can be important, I wouldn't put too much weight on FDA approval.

Just do some more research on what you and your mother would be comfortable with and go from there. Solotica may look good, but since you can't wear them that often, it may not be the best choice.

    HTHs! :-)
  • Meagan
are Solotica Hidrocharme colored contact lenses fda approved and can you order them through your doctor? My mom tells me that hard lenses are bad for your eyes and that my doctoor will not approve especialy since there out of the U.S. But they are so pretty and natural looking. Is there any good contacts your able to buy in the u.s and be apporved by your doctor? Ive tryed freshlooks it sucks.
  • Vuthy
    Hey KP,

Thanks! I really like the color of the mels too, but you're right, they aren't comfortable! But as someone with nearly black eyes, I think having thick lenses is the only way to cover up the black and change the color, and thick = uncomfy.

I don't know what your natural eye color is, but other good brands I've heard of are Soleko, Waicon, and Natural Touch (the brand Paris Hilton wears to turn her brown eyes blue). I haven't had any personal experience with these, but I'm sure you can find some info online.

    Share pictures if you do!
  • KP
Very pretty look for you!!! (Y)

I have the solotica mels without the limbal ring. They are so beautiful, however if I wear these for longer than 3 hours, I feel like i am going to go blind. Crazy as it sounds, my eyes actually hurt and feel scratched up after I remove them!!! No more soloticas for me!!! I am still looking for a natural green/hazel contacts...any advice???
