Adding speech bubbles, annotations, and captions to videos
I wanted to have some fun with the video I posted earlier of Penny and Jesse. Because of the poor quality and how fast the camera was moving at times, I knew it would make the video better if I added some notes to it such as speech or thought bubbles. YouTube has this capability, a feature they call video annotations. However, I couldn’t get it to work. It would seem like it’s working, but I always got an error that said: “Unable to reach the server. Try to reload this page in a few minutes.” It was especially frustrating because sometimes it wouldn’t show up until you’ve already added some notes and then WHAM all you work was lost.
I don’t know if something broke on YouTube’s end or if it’s just a connection issue because there’s too many people trying to do the same thing at the same time.
So, after trying for 2 nights, I decided to see if I there was someone else who had similar features. I found a site called TubePopper.com. The name is probably inspired by VH1’s old pop-up videos. I started using it but the interface had some lag and it wasn’t easy to move things around or modify things you’ve already added. A friend suggested I tried Viddler, thinking it had that feature, but it doesn’t.
Next, I tried Veeple which I found via a Google search. It seems more targeted towards commercial or corporate applications, but it’s currently free (they say it won’t be coming March) so I decided to try it out. Signup was easy and uploading was also a breeze. The interface was much easier to use than TubePopper and YouTube and I especially liked how there was a separate view just for the “spots” you added so you can just jump to and edit them directly. Adding captions and notes to videos is a resource-heavy process, so I understand that these applications won’t be super responsive, even still, I was impressed by Veeple.
I added some quick notes to the video. If I have more time later, I’ll try to jazz it up a bit with fonts and background colors:
