“Callanectics Kicks my Butt”

An oldie but a goodie

An oldie but a goodie

A few years ago, and I don’t remember how I came upon it, I ordered a VHS tape of an old exercise routine created in the 80s.

Callanetics is a form of deep-muscle exercise created by (and named after) Callan Pinckney.  It’s similar to pilates, I would say.

The exercises are simple in that you can do it on your living room floor and that you don’t need anything special besides a chair or a coffee table. However, they are hard. I consider myself in pretty good shape and I struggle through many of the exercises.

The reason why callanetics is very challenging is that it works muscles you normally don’t use very often.  You’re forced to target then, and then work then again and again for 50 to 100 reps! Now, the reps are very tiny, smooth movements and it all seems rather easy until you actually try it.

For example, one of their warm-up exercises works your arms, especially your tricep.  Stand with your feet about a foot apart and hold your arms out, palms down, so that you form a T shape. Twist your arms around by moving your thumb down and then around so that your palms now face up.  Then move your arms together behind you, keeping them straight, as if you were trying to touch your thumbs together behind your back.  Your palms should still be facing the ceiling.  Get your thumbs as close as you can, and then move about a 1/2 inch closer, then back apart.  Repeat 50 times, keeping your arms held as straight and high as possible.  Believe me, you will definitely feel the burn and your arms will be sore tomorrow!

After years of not doing the Callanetics (and never being consistent with it in the first place), I got the DVD off eBay about a month ago (Amazon has it but eBay was cheaper).  Last night, I put it in and went through the whole routine.  Now, I have been going to the gym pretty much every weekday, hitting the weight machines and sometimes also doing some cardio on the stepmill.  Never, never, have I been this sore from that.  My arms, thighs, upper back, and legs are aching.  Not in a bad way though; it’s telling me that I definitely reached in and worked those muscles yesterday!

I’m looking forward to completing the “10 hours” of workouts and seeing what kind of results I get.

“Lean Cuisine Review”

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

A review of several different Lean Cuisine products I have tried in the past month

They always make the picture look so appetizing

They always make the picture look so appetizing

Because of the on-going sale at Ralphs, I’ve stocked up on tons of Lean Cuisine entrées.  For the past 3 weeks, I’ve had a Lean Cuisine for lunch at work, and every now and then I will have one for dinner also.

Before the sale, I had never had a Lean Cuisine before. I have had Healthy Choice frozen dinners, however, so I expected the Lean Cuisines to be similar.  They’re actually better.

Lean Cuisine has 5 main product lines: One Dish Favorites, Café Classics, Comfort Classics, Spa Cuisine, Casual Eating, and Dinnertime Selects.  So what’s the difference?  From their website:

  • one dish favorites are fast, easy and delicious (think mac & cheese)
  • café classics are contemporary, restaurant-inspired dishes (beef & broccoli, chicken fried rice)
  • comfort classics bring you American homestyle entrées (baked chicken, pot roast)
  • spa cuisine classics are inspired by chefs at wellness spas (”fancy” ingredients)
  • casual eating dishes are convenient meals that you can eat anywhere (pizza, flatbreads, paninis)
  • dinnertime selects make dinnertime good anytime (larger portions)

Each line is conveniently color-coded.  I mainly got entrées from the Spa Cuisine line because they had yummy sounding names like “Ginger Garlic Stir-Fry with Chicken” and “Szechuan Style Stir Fry with Shrimp.”  I also got some Café Classics and a few Dinnertime Selects they seemed good to have around for lazy dinners.

Intially, I had bought a bunch of vegetarian dishes for my “Vegetarian until 6 PM” routine, but I didn’t find their “Butternut Squash Ravioli” or “Three Cheese Rigatoni” very satisfying.  I decided to get their fish and shrimp dishes instead for lunch, and they have been surprisingly good.

I really like the Parmesan Crusted Fish and the spicy Tortilla Crusted Fish.  The Lemon Pepper Fish is also pretty tasty and I’m quite impressed by their shrimp dishes.  I’ve had the Szechuan Style Stir-Fry with Shrimp and the Shrimp Alfredo; I expected mushy, watery shrimp like the kind you buy frozen and pre-cooked in the supermarket.  Instead, the shrimp (6 medium ones per dish) remained firm and flavorful.  Very nice!

Other dishes I really liked:

  • Ginger Garlic Stir-Fry with Chicken
  • Chicken in Peanut Sauce
  • Lemongrass Chicken - Might be my fav, yum!
  • Thai-Style Chicken
  • Orange Peel Chicken
  • Beef & Broccoli
  • Beef Portabello

I don’t really like the dishes that come with their pasta sauce.  It’s just a very basic red sauce that you can get sick of really quickly.  Fortunately, Lean Cuisine has a huge selection and there are plenty of other dishes to try.

Now, all this praise aside, there is one major issue* with the Lean Cuisine entrées: portion size!  I understand that they need to keep the portions fairly small in order to keep the calories down per serving, but sheesh, sometimes I feel like I’m simply eating a side dish or appetizer instead of a meal.  Scratch that.  I used to feel like I was eating an appetizer.  After about 3 weeks now, I’ve become accustomed to the smaller portions.  I take my time and eat slowly in order to fully enjoy my meal and let my stomach digest.  I also drink plenty of water with my meal and often have a cup of fat-free yogurt and fruit afterwards.  About 3 hours later, I’ll have a snack if I’m hungry.

Because I’m eating so well during the day, I can splurge a bit with dinner.  Sometimes (happening less and less now), I’ll go out to eat.  Usually, I fry or bake some meat to have with rice and veggies, eat something from my slow cooker, or if I’m feeling tired, I’ll have one (or even two) Lean Cuisines.  I’m really glad that I’ve found something I can stick to!

*Sodium content could also be an issue for some with the Lean Cuisine dishes.  Most entrées contain about 20% - 30% of your sodium for the day.  This is a really high number for such a small dish and should be taken into consideration by those watching their sodium intake.  Since I have below normal blood pressure, high sodium is not a concern for me.

“Jesse in the Spotlight”

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I realized that I don’t have nearly enough pictures of Jesse on here.  It’s not that I don’t have any; it’s just that Jesse, with her black shiny fur, doesn’t take very good pictures.  She ends up being too dark or reflecting all the light and losing any depth.

That being said, here are a few recent ones that came out well:

I love how dazed and stumpy she looks in this one.

“Monday”

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I’m home from work today.  Seems like I’m not the only one; there’s something going around the office.  I spent most of the weekend at home and slept a lot.  After nearly 2 weeks of gorgeous, summer-like weather, it’s been cold and damp, rainy and windy.  I don’t do well with sudden, extreme changes in temperature.  My sinuses go bonkers simply from going from a cold environment to a hot one and I start sneezing like crazy.

What sucks is that I’m not gonna make it to the gym today.  I have been going every weekday for 3 weeks straight. I could turn on the treadmill here and dust-off my dumbbells… hmm, we’ll see.

It’s bright and sunny out but pretty cold, about 55 or so.  I ventured out briefly earlier to the supermarket at the corner and got some yogurt, blueberries, and strawberries.  Figured I should load up on healthy stuff to strengthen my immune system. I also bought more Lean Cuisine frozen dinners.  I finally realized what they were doing, putting the entire selection on sale for $1.77 each when they’re usually $3 - $5 each.  The sale has been going on much longer than a normal sale, about 3 weeks now, and it’s because they’re trying to get people like me, who have resolved to eat healthier, to make Lean Cuisine such an integral part of your life that even when the price is back to normal, you’ll still buy it.  And you know what, it might just work!

I eat a Lean Cuisine every day for lunch at work.  Sometimes, I have one (or two) for dinner, but I have really come to depend on it for a quick, convenient and inexpensive lunch.  So yeah, even when it’s no longer on sale, I will probably still buy it.  Damn you marketing geniuses!

I am feeling better now.  Gotta make sure I go to bed at a good time tonight even though I’ve already slept a lot today (so I probably won’t be tired til late).   Maybe I will get an at-home workout in after all…
