Took a long overdue trip to the Asian grocery store today and—oh joy—they had a few mangosteens in!
A mangosteen is a southeast Asian fruit that’s still quite rare in the United States. They have been sold for $45 a pound or more in fancy schmancy gourmet stores, but today, I bought nearly a pound’s worth (4 fruits) for just under $5.
It has a light, sweet, citrusy and floral flavor. I can’t really describe it, but it’s similar to a cherimoya (another hard-to-describe fruit!) and very delicious. They must be in season now so check your local Asian mart for this tasty and much coveted fruit!

Mangosteens are about the size of a pool ball.

The thick, purple skin gives way to a soft, fleshy and delicious fruit.
