Check out and try Vetericyn. It's a one-step wound and infection treatment. This is what I use to my Labrador for any wounds or cuts. The wound drys up quickly. I learned this from Cesar Millan's endorsement. It's a little pricey though, but you really get what you pay for. Horses use this as well.

Update April 2010: The blisters are back! Well, one anyway. It formed just as we were getting our first really hot days of the season. I might force her to wear booties if it gets bad this summer.

Thanks for the comments Bri and Alyssa.

Yes, they are indeed heat blisters. I don't see the actual blisters because Penny gets to them before I do! I have also noticed that she tends to shuffle her feet instead of walking properly. She's shorter than our lab so I think she does this to try and keep up with Jesse's longer strides, which doesn't help in avoiding blisters on hot pavement! They're all healed now and with the summer over I don't think we'll be seeing any more until next year.

My yellow lab just got the same thing from a camping trip. The vet said it's a blister from rough rocks and heat. They said to cover it with a loose gauze bandage (using stick free gauze pads) for a few days and make sure he doesn't lick it. I never saw the blister either! Only the sore after.
