A Star Trek Halloween

With the Star Trek exhibit in town, I decided to use Halloween as an excuse to dress up for it. (Because, of course, I’m not nerdy enough to dress up for it otherwise. ;-) )

I chose to go as an Orion slave girl, an iconic character among Star Trek fans.  I thought it would be easy to pull off - a little green body paint, tussled hair, and a sexy outfit.  Boy, was I wrong.  Applying the green body paint was a major pain in the ass.

I used a professional product, Mehron Paradise AQ makeup, in Amazon Green.  It’s a water-activated makeup that doesn’t smudge off once dry.  That was a big plus for me because I didn’t want to be worried about rubbing off on people or furniture.  Cream makeup would have been easier to apply but it transfers quite easily.  However, getting the water-based makeup to go on evenly and smoothly was next to impossible.  It really was like working with watercolors.  Streaks and layered edge lines were easy to come by and hard to get rid of.  It dried quickly so I had to re-wet an area in order to blend it better but sometimes instead of blending it would just come off!  It was two and a half hours of utter frustration.  In the end, I gave up on trying to make it look perfect (I had washed and redid my face 3 times already) and settled for good enough.

As expected, I got stares everywhere I went.  No one really knew what I was supposed to be except at the Star Trek exhibit.  (Throughout the night I got: She-Hulk, reptile, Tinkerbell, Green Girl, and zombie.)  There, everyone knew I was an Orion slave girl and they all got a big kick out of it!  Little did I know, they were also having a costume contest and made sure I put my name down for it.  A few other attendees were in Starfleet uniforms, but needless to say, I really stood out.

The exhibit itself was pretty small and was mainly a gallery of models, costumes and prostheses.  The biggest attraction for me was the replica of the NCC-1701-D bridge from Star Trek: The Next Generation.  TNG is my favorite show of all time and I was so excited to be on the bridge and have my picture taken.  As expected, they had a professional take pictures of you so they can sell you the photos on the way out.  I ended up giving in and buying the one of me on in the Captain’s chair and they gave me a deal on a hologram of me in the transporter room because I had “such an awesome costume.”  I was a bit disappointed in the lack of a gift shop; they had a few small items for sale but nothing I wanted like a communication pin or replica shirts.  I still enjoyed it though!

Below are some pictures I took plus scans of the photos I bought.  I got so lucky with my camera because the battery was dying and I was able to take almost all the pictures I wanted before it died!  The only thing I missed was a shot of sickbay; my camera died as I was about to take that picture.  I didn’t have a camera for the rest of the evening though there was only 1 costume I saw that I wanted to take a picture of: a man was dressed like the guy with the baby from The Hangover!  It was hilarious.  He had on the same clothes, a beard, sunglasses and a fake baby in a carrier on his chest.  It was instantly recognizable:

It was a huge pain to put on, and a long shower and scrubbing didn't take it all off. I am still faintly green in certain areas. Oh well, tis the price I pay. I did have a blast! :-)
  • That Borg head is scary! I remember watching that back in the day and being terrified of Borg.

And I'm thinking maybe the shuttlecraft was from the latest Star Trek movie? It looks very similar.

Anyway, it looked like you had a blast!
  • Your costume is sooo awesome! I bet it was a pain to put on. I wonder how long it'll take to wash off. Are you still scrubbing like mad?
