Gray Face

Though she still thinks and acts like a little puppy, Penny is looking like the old dog she is more and more everyday. Her face has been graying for a while now.

I accidentally woke her up as I was trying to snap a shot of her napping with her tongue hanging out.

My bullheaded Penny.
“What kind of dog is that?”
I get asked that almost every time I’m out with Penny. I also get comments on how beautiful she is. She really is an awfully cute dog with that pink nose and those floppy pink ears. I usually answer that Penny is a pit bull or a Staffie or that I’m not sure, because really, I’m not sure at all. Her papers from the shelter say that she’s an American Staffordshire Terrier. Jesse’s papers had her pegged as a black Labrador mix, but it turns out that Jesse’s half Rottweiler, half mutt with some German Shepherd mixed in.
I’ve been dying to know for sure what exactly Penny is. I was going to do the same DNA test that Jesse had, but unfortunately Canine Heritage doesn’t check for American Staffordshire. After some research, I found a company with a database of over 190 breeds.

Wisdom Panel® Insights™ Identification Dog DNA Test Kit
After some wrangling and a headlock or two, I sent in the DNA samples yesterday. I’m looking forward to receiving the results in 2 - 3 weeks.
I’m expecting to see the AST in her report, but I also expected to see Labrador in Jesse’s. Maybe I’ll be surprised once again.

Strawberry Blonde Pig Face
I purchased the dog DNA test kit from Amazon where it was around $50.

Noticed this on a billboard on Los Feliz Blvd. on my way to work this morning:
Very simple and very striking. It took me a second to figure out the “NKLA” part—it’s No-Kill Los Angeles. From their website:
Led by Best Friends Animal Society, we’re dedicated to ending the killing of healthy and treatable pets in L.A. shelters. Our plan is straightforward. Provide spay/neuter services where they are needed most so fewer animals go into shelters, and increase adoptions through the combined efforts of the NKLA coalition so more animals come out of the shelters and go into new homes.
Awesome. I’m now following their Facebook page to stay up to date on news and events.
